많은 투자자들은 당신에게 얼마를 유치할 목표를 가지고 있냐고 불어볼겁니다. 이 질문을 듣게 되면, 창업자들은 마치 그들이 어떤 고정된 액수를 유치해야 되는 것처럼 느낄 수 있습니다. 하지만 실제로는 그러면 안 됩니다. 투자 유치처럼 불확실한 일을 진행하면서 고정된 계획을 가지는 것은 실수입니다.

그렇다면 투자자들은 왜 목표 금액을 물어볼까요? 선물을 사려고 가게에 들어갔을 때에 직원이 "얼마나 쓸 생각이세요?"라고 물어보는 이유랑 똑같습니다. 아마 특정한 금액은 생각하고 있지 않았고, 뭔가 좋은걸 찾으려고 하는데 싸기까지 하면 만족할겁니다. 직원이 물어보는 이유는 당신이 특정한 금액을 사용하기 위한 계획을 가져야 해서가 아니라, 당신이 낼 용의가 있는 금액의 상한선에 있는 물건들만 보여주기 위해서 입니다.

똑같이, 당신에게 계획이 있어야 하기 때문에 투자자가 투자 유치 목표액을 물어보는게 아닙니다. 사실은 그들이 하고 싶은 투자 금액에 당신이 걸맞는 수준인지를 확인하고, 또 당신의 야심과 합리성을 보고, 마지막으로 투자 유치가 얼마나 진행됐는지를 알기 위해서 입니다.

만약 당신이 투자 유치의 천재라면, "이번 시리즈 A 라운드에서 $7백만(약 70억원)을 유치하려고 하는데, 다음주 화요일까지 term sheet(역자 주: 밸류에이션, 투자 금액 및 기타 투자 조건들을 정리한 문서)를 보내주세요"라고 할 수 있습니다. 제가 아는 창업자들 중에서 이런 말을 했을 때에 VC들이 비웃지 않을만한 사람이 몇몇 있기는 합니다. 하지만 경험이 부족하지만 열정적인 다수에 속한다면, 제가 벤처를 홍보하는 데에 권한 해결책과 동일한 방법을 사용하면 됩니다. 즉, 올바른 일을 하면서 투자자들에게 하고 있는 일을 설명하세요.

투자 유치에서 올바른 전략은, 유치될 가능성이 있는 다양한 금액대에 따른 다양한 계획을 가지는 것입니다. 이상적으로, 당신은 투자자들에게 이런 얘기를 할 수 있어야 합니다: 아무런 투자를 받지 않고도 수익을 달성할 수 있지만, 수십만 달러(수억원) 정도를 투자받으면 똑똑한 친구 한두명 정도를 더 고용할 수 있고, 수백만 달러(수십억원)을 받으면 개발팀을 통째로 고용할 수 있다, 등등입니다.

투자자에 따라서 적합한 계획이 달라질 수 있습니다. 만약 시리즈 A 투자만 하는 VC와 얘기한다면 (많이 남아있지는 않지만), 가장 금액이 높은 계획 이외의 얘기를 하는건 시간 낭비입니다. 반면에 $20만(약 2억원) 정도씩 투자하는 엔젤투자자랑 얘기하고 있고, 아무 자금도 유치되지 않았다면, 가장 금액이 낮은 계획을 설명하는게 좋을겁니다.

당신이 유치받을 금액의 상한선을 생각해야 되는 행복한 고민이 있다면, 경험적으로 고용하고 싶은 사람 수에 $1.5만(약 15백만원)에 18개월을 곱하면 됩니다. 대부분 벤처에서 비용은 인력에 비례하고, 월 $1.5만은 한 사람 당 지출되는 일반적인 (각종 복리후생과 사무실 공간까지 포함된) 총 비용입니다. 한달에 $1.5만은 사실 꽤 높기 때문에, 정말 이 정도의 금액을 쓰면 안 됩니다. 하지만 투자 유치를 할 때에는 좀 높은 비용을 가정해서, 계산착오가 발생해도 괜찮을 여지를 두는게 좋습니다. 제조업처럼 추가적인 비용이 있다면, 제일 마지막으로 추가하세요. 아무런 추가 비용이 없고 20명을 고용한다고 하면, 가장 많이 유치할 금액의 한도는 20 x $1.5만 x 18 = $5.4백만(약 54억원)입니다.
